Château la Varière

A vineyard steeped in history

Situated in the Valley of the Kings, Chateau la Varière dates back to the 15th century and used to be the breadbasket of the famous nearby Chateau de Brissac. In charge of feeding the inhabitants of Chateau de Brissac, the local farmers supplied fish on Fridays and looked after the fruit orchards, cereals and vines. Over the centuries, many strong personalities lived here, as a result it became one of the most well-known properties in Anjou. Constantly committed to obtaining the best from the vineyards and wines, the property’s successive owners allowed Chateau la Varière to become a proud symbol of the Loire Valley.

The estate’s national and international aura contributes to the fine reputation of the wines of Anjou at home and worldwide.

Dating back to the 15th century, Château La Varière is one of the most reputed estates in Anjou. Its vast vineyard covers a surface area of 150 hectares and is essentially planted with Cabernet Franc (42%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Chenin (23%). It elaborates most of the area’s AOPs: Anjou Rouge, Anjou-Villages Brissac, Anjou Blanc, Coteaux de l’Aubance, Coteaux du Layon, Bonnezeaux, and Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru. Chateau la Varière is characterized by a quest for the best wines and terroirs: great wines are made from the finest parcels. Emphasis is placed on the soil, the exposure and the climate of each plot. The estate’s numerous terroirs add a hint of complexity to the wines. Short pruning, grass cover, and low hanging fruit, count among the special features allowing the red and sweet wines to reach high levels of maturity. Blending is also one of the keys to the success of Chateau La Varière’s wines. This vineyard is recognized for its Cabernet Sauvignon planted in Anjou’s gravelly soil. The expression of this terroir is displayed by the Chevalerie and Grande Chevalerie wine brands. The estate’s national and international aura contributes to the fine reputation of the wines of Anjou at home and worldwide.

The entire vineyard has obtained level 3 High Environmental Value Certification.
